Max Scherzer allowed only four hits over eight innings for his 14th win against just one loss Monday night as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-3 at U.S. Cellular Field. Victor Martinez went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, including a key two-run single in the fifth, while Torii Hunter homered for Detroit. All-star third baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game in the fifth inning with a sore left hip flexor and is listed as day-to-day.The Tigers and Sox resume their series tonight on Chicago’s south side, with Rick Porcello dealing for the Tigers and Hector Santiago for the White Sox. In other baseball action…Junior Lake hit his first major league home run and drove in three runs as the Cubs defeated the Diamondbacks 4-2 in Arizona. Before the game, the Cubs announced they had traded pitcher Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers for three minor leaguers and the ever-popular player to be named later. Garza, who was supposed to start last night’s game, was 6-1 with a 3.17 ERA and had been one of the most sought-after pitchers in interleague trade talks. The Cubs might not be done dealing either. The New York Post is reporting the Cubs may be close to a deal to send slugging outfielder Alfonso Soriano back to the Yankees, where he started his career.
In the Midwest League, the West Michigan Whitecaps struck out 19 times last night as they lost to Peoria, 7-3. The ‘Caps have today off and open a three-game series with Fort Wayne at Fifth Third Ballpark Wednesday.
