MUSKEGON, MI (WHTC) - The fall by a one-time award-winning Allegan Co. Sheriff's Deputy may now be complete.

Kevin Haan had earned the department's ALLCOPS honor in 2006 for excellence in community policing, but he had turned in his badge less than two years later after a series of arrests in various incidents, ending a 17-year career. Thirteen months ago, a passing motorist noticed Haan's pickup truck going erratically on a road in northern Kent County and started following him while calling 911. As state police and sheriff's deputies in two counties joined the chase, his vehicle drove through the roundabout at the M-46 and M-37 junction, and at speeds of over 75 miles an hour, the truck went west along Apple Avenue before crashing into a vacant former school building in Muskegon. A half-empty bottle of vodka was found in the pickup's cab by officers at the scene.

Haan had pled not guilty by reason of insanity in his trial, but a jury convicted him of being guilty but mentally ill last month. He was sentenced on Monday in Muskegon County Circuit Court to between five and 15 years of incarceration in which he will receive mental health treatment.
