UNDATED (WHTC) -- A man who’s message of freedom spread across the world has died. Nelson Mandela, who had been in fragile health for some time has passed on at the age of 95. Congressman Fred Upton had the chance to meet Mandela before a joint session of the United States Congress. Upton issued a statement on the passing of the anti-apartheid leader and former South African President, in part, “He was a transformational figure on the world stage, but also a public servant of great humility. We would be well-served by having more leaders follow his example.” Upton cosponsored legislation awarding Mandela the Congressional Gold Medal in 1998, the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress.
