COVERT, MI (WHTC) - For the first time in 2013, the Palisades nuclear power plant near Covert was shut down on Friday afternoon, this time because of problems in the cooling water heat exchangers system that had foiled trouble-shooting efforts for several previous days. Plant officials didn’t have a timeline for when the facility will remain off-line until the system is fixed, but did say that additional repairs to other areas of the plant will also be done. Palisades has been plagued by various shutdowns in the past couple of years, some because of operational errors in 2011, and some because of pipe leaks in 2012.
