Tigers, Cubs, "Caps Win: White Sox Fall, Logano Wins at Bristol

UNDATED (WHTC) -- Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suarez each knocked in two runs to power the Tigers to an 8-6 win and a doubleheader split with the Twins at Target Field.  The Twins won the first game 12-4.  Torii Hunter, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez each had three hits for Detroit, which snapped a three-game skid.  Justin Verlander gave up four runs in five-and-two-thirds innings for the win.  Joe Nathan locked up his 27th save.  The Tigers face the Twins again this afternoon.  Broadcast time on 1450 WHTC begins at 1:45 P.M. 

Chris Coghlan ripped a three-run triple to power the Cubs in a 7-2 win over the Orioles at Wrigley Field.  Javier Baez clubbed a solo homer while Arismendy Alcantara finished 3-for-4 with two runs for Chicago.  Justin Grimm earned the win in relief after Kyle Hendricks gave up two runs in two innings to start the game.  Hendricks did not return after a rain delay of more than three hours.  The Cubs take on the Orioles this afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The White Sox fell to the Yankees, 5-3, on Saturday.  Jose Abreu, Carlos Sanchez and Alexei Ramirez  each drove in a run for the White  Sox, who have lost five in a row. Scott Carroll gave up five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits with three walks over six innings.  The White Sox finish their series with the Yankees this afternoon in the Bronx.

In front of a season-high sellout crowd of 9,798, Domingo Leyba yanked a walk-off double inside of first base and the Whitecaps completed their 11th series sweep of the season with a 3-2, 10-inning win over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Ballpark.  The Whitecaps begin their final road trip of the regular season with a game this afternoon against the South Bend Silver Hawks.

 

Jason Day carded a 3-under 68 on Saturday as he moved into a share of the lead after three rounds at The Barclays in New Jersey.  Day was joined at 9-under par by Jim Furyk, who shot a 2-under 69 at Ridgewood Country Club. 

 

Joey Logano claimed his third win in the Sprint Cup Series this season by taking Saturday night's Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Logano grabbed the lead from Matt Kenseth with 45 laps to go and then held off a hard-charging Brad Keselowski in the closing laps, beating him to the finish line by just 0.4 seconds. Jeff Gordon, the current points leader and winner of last weekend's race at Michigan, finished 16th.
