UNDATED (WHTC)-State Fire Marshall Richard Miller says that now is a great time to discuss fire safety and overall Halloween safety with your children. Flame retardant costumes, artificial light such as glow sticks and flashlights instead of candles and proper distances from heat sources are all good topics to cover. The National Fire Protection Association’s statistics mention candles specifically as they account for over 40 percent of all home fires.
Other good ideas proposed by Miller include reflective strips on costumes, keeping costumes short enough to prevent falls, and the teaching of children to use the “ Stop, drop and roll” technique in the event their costume catches fire.
