SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC) - Saugatuck's battles with a resident over signage is over. Council members huddled behind closed doors with the city attorney on Monday evening before deciding not to appeal a ruling by an Allegan District Judge that the city’s ordinance limiting property owners to three opinion signs was deemed unconstitutional. John Porzondek and James Seaman had put up a canopy-shaped “butterfly” of “misfit” signs in front of their Lake Street house, critical of city government in a five-year running battle, and claimed that it was a piece of art protected by the US First Amendment. Porzondek is running for a City Council seat in next Tuesday's election.
