ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) - Allegan County Commissioners are hoping that they aren’t closing the proverbial barn door after the horses have already escaped. Yesterday, board members agreed to declare a state of emergency for Dorr, Hopkins, Leighton, Overisel and Wayland townships due to last month’s torrential rains. Although infrastructure damage wasn’t as extensive as it was along the Grand River in neighboring Ottawa County, it was still substantial, in the neighborhood of between 600 and 800 thousand dollars. The declaration is a step towards securing state and federal disaster relief funds. Ottawa County Is already under a Michigan state of emergency due to the flooding, and inspectors combed the areas along the Grand River to determine if money from Washington is warranted.
