ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) - It may have been the dead of night in the Allegan County Seat, but for Sheriff's Department officials, it was the brightest of days.

The transfer of 161 prisoners from the jail on Walnut Street in Allegan, which had been in operation since 1961 and could not be expanded beyond its 176-bed capacity, was done in three and a half hours overnight without incident. There were no reports of any safety or security compromises during the move to the new 225-bed lockup at the site of the former Haworth seating plant on River Avenue. The nearly 20 million-dollar renovation was apparently completed in February, with a public open house held in early March, but fire code violations that took six months to complete kept the sheriff's department from moving in until late last month.

Allegan County officials say that the former jail will be torn down to make room for more parking at the adjacent county courthouse.

ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) - Are things getting nasty between the City of Zeeland and Consumers Energy?

The Zeeland City Council holds a public hearing tonight before voting on whether to revoke an industrial exemption certificate for Consumers Energy involving its natural gas-fueled power plant off of Fairview Street. It stems from the Jackson-based utility appealing to the state tax tribunal a 260 million-dollar assessment of the property by the city, asking that it be trimmed by more than half to 112 million dollars. The city claims that Consumers has broken the abatement agreement by appealing this assessment, with a decision by the tribunal not expected until sometime next year at the earliest.

Consumers Energy officials say that they will be on hand to state their case during the public hearing, which is scheduled for 7:15 PM tonight at Zeeland City Hall.

ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) -- During Monday night’s Zeeland City Council meeting, there were a few items on the agenda.  An important action item was the move to revoke a tax abatement held by Consumers Energy.  The original IFT contract between the City of Zeeland and Consumers Energy has a clause stating that if an appeal of a tax assessment was made by Consumers, the City would have the right to revoke the abatement.  City Mgr. Tim Klunder says not revoking could result in a higher millage for taxpayers.

City Council voted unanimously to revoke the abatement for Consumers Energy.  Spokesperson for the company, Roger Morgenstern said he hopes for further negotiation with the City.
