Royals hold on in close win over Tigers
Eric Hosmer's first-inning triple knocked in the only run of the game as the Kansas City Royals held on for an important 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. The Tigers had a three-game win streak halted after mustering just seven hits. Doug Fister (12-9) was dealt the hard-luck loss, permitting just the one run and striking out six over 7 2/3 innings of work. The Tigers meet the Royals this afternoon. Byrd's HR lifts Pirates over Cubs
Marlon Byrd's home run in the seventh inning helped the Pittsburgh Pirates take a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs in the third of a four-game set. The Pirates moved back into a tie for first place in with the Cardinals. Nate Schierholtz drove in the lone run of the game for the Cubs, who have dropped three of their last four. The Cubs take on the Pirates again this afternoon in Pittsburgh.
Indians power past White Sox
The Indians, chasing a wild card spot in the AL, are 14-2 against the White Sox this season, including 11 wins in a row. They have won the first three games of this four-game series by a combined score of 25-5. Andre Rienzo went four-plus innings for Chicago, giving up seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts. The White Sox try to get a win this afternoon over the Indians in Chciago.

Michigan Avoids Shocking Upset At Hands Of Akron
Number-12 Michigan's home winning streak almost came to a surprising close as they squeaked past underdog Akron, 28-24, at the Big House. It was the Wolverines 17th straight home win as they moved to 3-and-0, while the Zipps lost their 28th road game in-a-row. Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner accounted for three touchdowns, but also turned the ball over four times. Fitz Toussaint scored what ended up being a game-winning two-yard TD run with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Spartans Get Big Win
Connor Cook threw four touchdown passes in the first half, and the Michigan State offense finally looked smooth in a 55-17 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday. Cook went 15 of 22 for 202 yards before being replaced by Tyler O'Connor early in the third quarter. Cook looked sharp, albeit against an opponent from the Football Championship Subdivision, and now the Spartans can prepare to play Notre Dame next weekend
Western Michigan Topped by Northwestern
The Western Michigan football team fell in a hard-fought battle to No. 17 Northwestern, 38-17, late Saturday night. Tyler Van Tubbergen threw for a game-high 202 yards and two touchdown passes in the loss. Corey Davis led all receivers with 112 yards on five receptions and had one touchdown. Brian Fields averaged 6.1 yards-per-carry on 13 rushes to lead the team with 79 yards on the ground. In total, the WMU (0-3) offense racked up 345 yards on the night and committed a season-low one turnover. The next opponent for the Broncos is Iowa. The game will be in Iowa City next Saturday at noon.
Central Michigan Drops to UNLV
The Central Michigan Chippewas (1-2) were paced by Cooper Rush who hit 23-of-46 passes for 265 yards and a score, but he was also intercepted twice and sacked three times in the losing effort. Titus Davis reeled in eight passes for 116 yards and a score, while Saylor Lavallii chipped in with 65 rushing yards and two TDs on 19 attempts. Next Saturday the Chippewas will be at home against Toledo.
Hope Routs Millikin
The Hope football team made the dedication of Ray & Sue Smith Stadium a smashing success. The Flying Dutchmen erupted for a 41-7 win against Millikin (Ill.) on Saturday, riding a 35-point first half to improve to 2-0 on the season in front of a home opener crowd of 4,110. Hope dedicated its home field to former head coach and athletic director Ray Smith and his wife, Sue, during a pregame ceremony.
