LANSING, MI (WHTC) - Saugatuck is the only Lakeshore school district named in a filing by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, asking that federal funding be halted to 35 districts statewide that continue to use Native American nicknames and mascots for their sports teams. The term Indians is among those deemed offensive and derogatory. Saugatuck’s board of education meets next Monday, and this issue may be on the agenda. Fellow Southwestern Athletic Conference member Hartford is also on the list, also for it's "Indians" moniker.
