Petition asks for road end to be public beach in Park, Port Sheldon townships

A Change.org  petition to allow beach activities at the New Holland road end has gained some momentum lately, but will likely not make a difference. As of right now, the area is only to be used for water access and not as a legitimate beach. Creator of the petition Kara Scheerhorn and the one thousand people who have signed it would like that to change. The petition asks both Park and Port Sheldon Townships to allow the public to enjoy the use of the New Holland road end as a beach, as it has been in the past. Scheerhorn posted a photo of her grandparents in their youth at the James Street road end to remind others that the road ends have been a part of the community for years. Park Township officials released a statement explaining that there hasn’t been any effort by them to restrict use of the area as a beach, but according to state law, road ends are not beaches and are for water access only. The road end will remain accessible for water access use, but not for typical beach activities.
