HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - A bright yet still young member of the Hope College community is gone. Tod Gugino died on Saturday after what school officials called an extended illness at the age of 49. A lifelong Flying Dutchman, Gugino has been connected with Hope since his undergraduate days in the early 1980’s, joining the school staff a year after his 1985 graduation. He was the director of chemistry laboratories at Hope and founded a successful summer science camp program at the college for area youngsters. A three-year varsity basketball letterwinner under Glenn Van Wieren, Gugino was also a roundball coach, guiding the Flying Dutch women for three seasons before Brian Morehouse took over in 1996, and served a couple of winters as Holland High’s girls basketball mentor. Gugino is survived by his wife and four children; funeral arrangements are pending.
