HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - It was a long night for Holland City Council members, with two major topics of discussion during their biweekly business meeting.

First was the subject of the Wooden Shoe Motel, and whether or not its public lodging license should be renewed after it had expired on April 30th. City Manager Ryan Cotton has recommended that it should not be due to long-standing code violations and various enforcement and maintenance issues, while owner CJ Patel wanted more time to complete repairs and renovations. Council decided to give Patel through August 7 to bring the motel up to code, or lose the license permanently.

After that, the long-standing issue of overnight street parking was tackled by the panel, bringing up the age-old arguments over keeping streets clear for safety and maintenance purposes while more and more vehicles are being parked on lawns and yards in order to comply with the city’s ban.  Council approved a five-month “pilot” program, to begin next May, which will gauge whether or not a partial or complete lifting of the overnight street parking ban should be implemented.
