Holland Cell Phone Retailer Held Up at Gunpoint

HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - Having two employees on hand apparently kept a cellular phone carrier on Holland’s South Side from suffering loss and perhaps prevented any harm done.
According to Public Safety Captain Jack Dykstra, a black man in his teens to early 20’s walked into the Verizon Wireless retailer on Washington Avenue near 40th Street around 7:45 last night, drew out a long-barreled, revolver-style handgun, and demanded merchandise from the clerk. Apparently unaware to the suspect, a second worker in the back quickly escaped and phoned 911. The suspect then fled on foot without getting any merchandise, and the two employees were not harmed. A canine unit wasn’t able to follow a track left behind by the suspect, but an image from surveillance video was captured and is posted above.
Anyone with any information on the matter is asked to contact Public Safety (policetips@cityholland.com) or Silent Observer.

UNDATED (WHTC) -- If you are under the impression that eating well on SNAP benefits is an easy task, Lisa Uganski, Dietition and Health Educator at the Ottawa Dept. of Public Health would certainly disagree with you.

For that reason, Uganski is asking those who donate to food drives and food pantries to consider donating healthier options. Share your thoughts at http://ottawafood.org

Strong-Arm Burglar Sought in South Haven

SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC) - South Haven police believe that there may be more than meets the eye involving a strong-arm home burglary earlier this week. An unnamed 70-year-old man was found bound and gagged when officers arrived at the residence off of Center and Van Buren Streets during the overnight hours on Tuesday, and he was briefly hospitalized for treatment of bumps and bruises suffered in a scuffle with the assailant. Detectives believe that the suspect may have some knowledge of the victim or of his home, and that it was not a random act of violence. An undetermined amount of cash was taken in the crime, and no arrests have been made. The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his 40’s, about six feet tall and weighing around 200 pounds. Tips to South Haven Police (269-637-5151) are welcome.
Harbor Humane Society Helping Couple with Over-Abundance of Cats

UNDATED (WHTC) -- The Harbor Humane Society is stepping up and taking over the care of 33 unaltered, unvaccinated young cats, ranging from a nursing litter to about two years of age. The cats come from a home where the couple took in stray cats, supplying shelter, food and water for all of them. The problem: they did not have the money to have the cats spayed or neutered and the population swelled. Harbor Humane Society Development Director, Sarah Uzarski, said the animals will be brought in phases to the Shelter.
To make room for the cats, other shelters and rescue organizations will take some of the cats already at Harbor Humane. Uzarski says the cost to spay, neuter and vaccinate the cats will cost upward of $3-thousand and is hoping that the public will also step up, whether it be donations or adoptions. Funding from State Boosts Ottawa County's Money for Road Improvements

UNDATED (WHTC) -- The state of Michigan will chip in $1.5 million towards road and bridge improvements in Ottawa County. The money comes to the Ottawa County Road Commission thanks to special funding allocated in the state’s general fund budget that begins this month. The money is part of $285 million in overall funding the Legislature allocated for fiscal year 2014-15, State Rep. Roger Victory announced on Friday.
"Ottawa County roads and bridges will continue to get rebuilt with the help of this special funding,” said Victory, R-Hudsonville. “Local motorists deserve safe and efficient roadways, and after years of neglect, it’s good to see our road commissions getting the funding they deserve. A better infrastructure has many positive benefits. Repairing our roads also will help drive commerce and improve our economy.”
