HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - One of the busiest intersections on Holland's South Side has been closed.
Crews are at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and 48th Street, on M-40 just south of US-31, on a report of a gas leak in the area. The closure was reported just after 10 AM, with a strong, distinctive odor that can be smelled east of the area due to breezy conditions. A construction crew apparently cracked a 200-pound gas line, causing the leakage, and there are no initial reports of any damages or injuries as a result, but the roads in the area have been cordoned off. Holland city officials say that it could be until late afternoon or early evening before repairs are made and the roads are reopened.
Update: The leak has been capped but HDPS Fire Captain Chris Tinney says that the roads will stay closed while repairs are made. A detour has been set up: Southbound traffic on M-40 (Lincoln Ave.) should take U.S. 31 to 32nd Street, east to Waverly Road, then south on Waverly to M-40. Northbound traffic should use northbound Industrial Avenue to E. 40th St. then west to northbound U.S. 31.
